C-Smash VRS
The best Sega game not made by Sega. Wonderful.
Ian Dean, Creative Bloq
Sega's futuristic sports classic Cosmic Smash reimagined for VR and PS5 - single player and two-player, versus or co-op. C-Smash VRS fuses low-gravity racket action with block breaking challenges. Imagine feeling both stimulated and relaxed, your mind and full-body avatar at one with the best music and stunning visuals.
Behind The Scenes
After enduring two lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic, RapidEyeMovers' founder and creative director Jörg Tittel was yearning for the simpler, more physical and innocent days when SEGA ruled the arcades and their final console, the Dreamcast, brought a crazy amount of timeless classics into the world.
Among them was Cosmic Smash, an ultra stylish single-player third-person game combining brick breaking with squash in space! For two decades, he'd dreamt about revisiting that holodeck and the pandemic made this a must. Get us off this infested planet and let me move my body with my dearly missed friends! RapidEyeMovers was founded. SEGA granted us the license and less than a year later, C-Smash VRS was announced with a beautiful Edge magazine cover and 12-page feature by Simon Parkin.
Our debut game was a PlayStation VR2 launch window title - playable in first person, solo and for two players - followed by Meta Quest 2/3, Pico 4. A few months later, the brand-new C-Smash VRS New Dimension came to PS5, returned the IP to third person. In a first, especially for a fast moving sports title, New Dimension allows PS5 players to compete against full-body PS VR2 players online.
Art director Rob Davis and Wolf & Wood did a great job bringing our reimagining of Cosmic Smash's iconic aesthetics into 3D. Ken Ishii (Rez Infinite), Danalogue (The Comet is Coming) and UK music legends UNKLE crafted an incredible original score. Digital Foundry named it their 2023 VR Game of the Year and we earned a Golden Joystick nomination.
The game launched RapidEyeMovers into orbit.
